Let’s Go Creek Stomping in Huntsville!

If you grew up in Alabama, creek stomping probably doesn’t need an explanation. But just in case you’re new here: it’s exactly what it sounds like. You find a creek, you stomp around in it, and you let the kids be kids. Water shoes, rain boots or old sneakers, swimsuit or play clothes, it doesn’t matter. The whole point is getting in there, skipping rocks, flipping over wet rocks with a stick, and seeing what lives underneath. It’s simple, it’s free, and it’s the kind of afternoon your kids will actually remember. Here’s where to take them this summer.
What will you need?
Before you head out, toss these in your bag:
- Sunscreen
- Bug repellent (creek mosquitoes are no joke)
- Water shoes, old tennis shoes, rain boots
- Towels
- A small net for catching minnows or tadpoles
- first aid kit
And a friendly reminder: always leave a natural creek area better than you found it. These ecosystems are home to native plants and animals worth protecting!
When to Go
Late May through August is the sweet spot for creek stomping season in Huntsville. For most locations, aim to arrive before 11 AM, especially in July and August when the heat is no joke. Creeks also run higher and faster after heavy rain, so always check conditions before you head out and when in doubt, wait for a dry weather day.
A Quick Water Safety Note
Creek stomping is wonderfully low-key but a few common sense reminders go a long way. Never leave kids unattended near the water, even in shallow spots. Creek beds are slippery so water shoes with good grip are a must. And always check water levels after recent rain before letting little ones wade in.
Indian Creek Greenway
This greenway really does have it all. A dog park, a playground, a shady paved walking trail, and plenty of spots to get your feet wet. A great all-in-one stop for the whole family.
Best for: All ages! The paved trail makes this one stroller-friendly and the creek access is easy without a long hike. A great first creek stomp for toddlers.
Best time to go: Morning visits are your best bet, especially in July and August. The tree cover helps but the paved trail heats up fast. Aim for before 11 AM for the most comfortable experience.
Water safety note: Always supervise kids near the water, even in shallow spots. Creek beds can be slippery so water shoes with good grip are a must here.
Make a day of it: After your creek stomp, head over to Campus 805 for lunch or an early dinner. It’s just a short drive and there’s something on the menu for every kid in the crew.

Alum Hollow Trail at Green Mountain
Part of the Land Trust’s Green Mountain Nature Preserve, this 1-mile trail has a steep stretch near the end but rewards you with a beautiful creek and even some fishing spots. Worth every step.
Best for: Ages 5 and up. The 1-mile trail has a steep section near the end so little legs will need to be ready for a real hike. Worth it though!
Best time to go: Early morning is ideal here. The hike itself will warm you up so starting before 9 AM on hot summer days makes the whole trip more enjoyable for everyone.
Water safety note: Check water levels before you go, especially after recent rain. The creek can run faster and higher than it looks after a good storm.
Make a day of it: You’ve earned a treat after that hike! Head down the mountain and grab ice cream at Handel’s in Jones Valley. The perfect reward for tired little legs.

Hays Nature Preserve
One of our all-time favorites, tucked just east of Hampton Cove. Follow the road through the preserve until you spot the parking lot on your left. Cross the bridge or head down the trails to find lots of shallow spots perfect for stomping around. Fishing is an option here too!
Best for: All ages! Easy, flat access to shallow creek spots makes this one of the most toddler-friendly options on the list. Bonus points for the fishing.
Best time to go: This one has great tree cover so it stays fairly comfortable even mid-morning. That said, earlier is always better in the summer. Plan to arrive by 10 AM if you can.
Water safety note: The shallow spots are perfect for little ones but always scout the area before letting kids jump in. Slippery rocks are everywhere and flip flops are not your friend here.
Make a day of it: Hampton Cove has some great lunch spots nearby, both fast food and sit down. Grab a bite and let the kids wind down after a morning of stomping and exploring.

Fagan Creek on the Land Trust Wildflower Trail
A great option even for little ones! Hike to the top of the trail and let the creek be the reward. Splashing around in Fagan Creek after a little hike is peak summer afternoon energy.
Best for: Ages 4 and up. There’s a little bit of a hike involved before you reach the creek but it’s manageable for most kids and the payoff is worth it.
Best time to go: Go early! The hike to the creek is more fun when it’s not blazing hot. Early morning also means more wildlife to spot along the way.
Water safety note: Never leave kids unattended near the creek, even for a minute. The rocks along Fagan Creek can be especially slippery so sturdy water shoes are a must.
Make a day of it: This one is a great standalone adventure. Pack a picnic lunch and make an afternoon of it right there on the trail.
Mill Creek Greenway in Madison
Dogs welcome on this one! Mill Creek is a smaller, easy-to-navigate stream that flows right along the path, and there’s a large dog park nearby. A solid choice for the whole crew, furry members included.
Best for: All ages, including four-legged family members! The stream is smaller and calm, making it a low-key option for younger kids and first-time creek stompers.
Best time to go: Morning is best but this one is a nice option for late afternoon too once the heat starts to break. The shaded path makes it more forgiving than open spaces.
Water safety note: Mill Creek is smaller and generally calm but water levels can change after heavy rain. When in doubt, sit it out and come back on a dry weather day.
Make a day of it: Madison has no shortage of great lunch spots nearby. Grab a bite on Main Street and stop by some of the great shops like Blue Apple Books.

Bethel Spring
Another Land Trust gem worth the trip. Bethel Spring features an environmentally significant spring and creek, plus one of Madison County’s largest waterfalls. It’s a little more special than your average creek stomp.
Best for: Ages 6 and up. The terrain is a little more rugged and the waterfall adds an extra wow factor that older kids will really appreciate.
Best time to go: Morning is the move here. The trail can get warm and the waterfall is especially magical in the early light. An added bonus for early birds!
Water safety note: The waterfall area is beautiful but deserves extra caution, especially with younger kids. Stay on designated paths near the water and keep a close eye on little ones near the falls.
Make a day of it: This one pairs beautifully with a drive through the countryside on the way home. Stop at a local farm stand if you spot one, or grab lunch in nearby Madison on your way back.
